Australia’s quarantine requirements for imported bamboo, wood and grass products

With the increasing demand for bamboo, wood and grass products in the international market, more and more related products of bamboo, wood and grass enterprises in my country have entered the international market. However, many countries have established strict inspection and quarantine requirements for the import of bamboo, wood and grass products based on biosecurity and the need to protect their own economies.
01

Which products require entry permits

Australia does not require an entry permit for general bamboo, wood, rattan, willow and other products, but must obtain an entry permit for grass products (except animal feed, fertilizers, and grass for cultivation) before entering the country.

Unprocessed straw is prohibited from entering the country.

02

Which products need entry quarantine

#Australia implements batch-by-batch quarantine for imported bamboo, wood and grass products, except for the following situations:

1. Low risk wooden articles (LRWA for short): For deep-processed wood, bamboo, rattan, rattan, willow, wicker products, etc., the problem of pests and diseases can be solved in the process of manufacturing and processing.

Australia has an existing system to evaluate these manufacturing and processing processes. If the evaluation results meet Australia’s quarantine requirements, these bamboo and wood products are considered low-risk wood products.

2. Plywood.

3. Reconstituted wood products: products processed from particleboard, cardboard, oriented strand board, medium-density and high-density fiberboard, etc. that do not contain natural wood components, but plywood products are not included.

4. If the diameter of wooden products is less than 4 mm (such as toothpicks, barbecue skewers), they are exempted from quarantine requirements and will be released immediately.

03

Entry Quarantine Requirements

1. Before entering the country, live insects, bark and other substances with quarantine risks shall not be carried.

2. Require the use of clean, new packaging.

3. Wooden products or wooden furniture containing solid wood must be fumigated and disinfected before entering the country with a fumigation and disinfection certificate.

4. Containers, wooden packages, pallets or dunnage loaded with such goods must be inspected and processed at the port of arrival. If the product has been processed according to the treatment method approved by AQIS (Australian Quarantine Service) before entry, and is accompanied by a treatment certificate or a phytosanitary certificate, inspection and treatment can no longer be carried out.

5. Even if processed wood products of sporting goods have been processed by approved methods and have phytosanitary certificates before entry, they will still be subject to compulsory X-ray inspection at a rate of 5% of each batch.

04

AQIS (Australian Quarantine Service) approved processing method

1. Methyl bromide fumigation treatment (T9047, T9075 or T9913)

2. Sulfuryl fluoride fumigation treatment (T9090)

3. Heat treatment (T9912 or T9968)

4. Ethylene oxide fumigation treatment (T9020)

5. Wood permanent anticorrosion treatment (T9987)
